Patek Philippe has always excelled at intricate watchmaking, but after the Great Crash of 1929, fewer consumers could afford the brand's pricey timepieces. After acquiring a majority stake in the company, Jean and Charles Henri Stern tasked David Penney with creating a simple and affordable watch. Penney created the Calatrava in accordance with the Bauhaus school's minimalist, function-first ethos, and named it after the Spanish military order already incorporated into the Patek Philippe logo.

In the early 1950s, Patek Philippe introduced the Calatrava reference 2525, which remained in production for roughly ten years. The first series was fitted with the 10”200 caliber that was created in 1946 and utilized for approximately twenty years, like this offered example. Later models were fitted with the 12”-400 slightly larger movement and thicker with domed backs. 

The reference 2525 was mainly produced in yellow gold, with a few pink gold examples such as this one. With a stepped bezel and lugs, this 2525-1 is very refined with a sophisticated case design. The present example is in fine shape, with legible hallmarks on the lugs and a clean case.

Manufactured in 1954, this offered example is equipped with the manual winding Patek Philippe caliber 10-200 movement. It is rhodium-plated, with fausses côtes embellishment, and is stamped with the Geneva Quality Hallmark. It is constructed with 18 jewels, a shock absorber mechanism, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a Gyromax monometallic balance adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism, and top five positions. In addition, there is a self-compensating blued steel Bréguet balance spring, a five-bridge construction, and a swan neck micrometer regulator.
