The caliber 3185 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. It is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring, offering greater resistance to shocks and to temperature variations.
Mechanical automatic self-winding Rolex caliber 3185 movement is rhodium-plated, with oeil de perdrix embellishment, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance that's adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions. It includes a self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring, Microstella regulating screws, and a central hacking seconds mechanism.
This mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vhp (4Hz).
The Rolex caliber 3185 used in models GMT-Master II and Explorer II, is based on the 3135, but fitted with an adjustable 24h hand. It was replaced by the 3186 around 2005.
