The creation of the original Portugieser model initiated in the late 1930's with a special request from a Portuguese client in creating a wristwatch with the same size and accuracy as an ordinary IWC pocket watch. IWC was intrigued by the idea and set about to fulfill the client's desire. They selected the slimmest and most reliable pocket watch movement that they manufactured, and went about designing a case to house it in.
The signature round case design of the Portugieser family was initiated in 1939 to honor Portugal's great seafaring explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan.
