The caliber 3085 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. It is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring, offering greater resistance to shocks and to temperature variations.
This mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz).
This model ref. 16760 was launched in 1983 and was the first instance of GMT-Master II, featuring for the first time a 24-hour hand that can be set independently from the traditional 12-hour hand.
Here are the new features of the GMT-Master II compare to the GMT-Master:
- The GMT-Master II has the ability to display three time zones simultaneously as opposed to two
- independent setting of the GMT hand for the first time in a GMT-Master model
- thicker case
- white gold index surrouders
- dubbed "Fat Lady" because of its extra fat case in order to host the new caliber 3085
- tritrium indexes
- large crown guards
You might hear the ref. 16760 referred to as the “Sophia Loren", the "Fat Lady" or the "Coke".
This model was then replaced by the ref. 16710 in 1989 featuring a new, but identical functioning caliber and a slimmer design.
In 2007 the ref. 16710 was then replaced by ref. 116710 that is still in production today.
Despite the fact that the GMT-Master II was launched in 1983, the GMT-Master was produced until 1999 for financial reasons (less expensive).
